Eat Local. Eat Healthy.

Eating healthy doesn’t have to be time consuming or costly or even confusing. It can actually be easy, especially this time of year when fresh local foods are all around.

Visit your local farmers market or food stand and reap the many benefits of eating seasonally.

  • Get an extra boost of nutrients.  Local produce is picked at its peak of ripeness so it is full of flavor. It also has a shorter distance from harvest to table providing an abundance of nutrients.
  • Buy in bulk and freeze for year round produce. Save money by buying strawberries and blueberries in bulk. Rinse berries in water and freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once frozen, transfer to a container and enjoy all winter long in smoothies or oatmeal!
  • Try something new. Try a new or unique variety of fruits or vegetables. It’s a great opportunity to get preparation tips straight from the source.

What is the best produce right now?

Asparagus – full of vitamins A, C, E and K for a healthy immune system. Grill of bake with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.

Strawberries – loaded with vitamin C and great in salads, yogurt or smoothies.

Spinach and Greens – a great source of fiber and vitamins A, C, and K. Great for salads on warm summer evenings or add to eggs for breakfast.
